Mill Books
We found an abandoned sugar mill in Hawaii. We decided to explore and photograph the remains. This photo is of the books and records left behind in the old mill’s office building. After returning from the trip, Praxis Gallery had a Call for photos of "Empty Places, Abandoned Spaces." I submitted this photo, it was accepted, and will be exhibited in the Gallery from Dec 16, 2023 - Jan. 6, 2024. 22 x 28 prints are $200. The photo's title, "Mill Books," makes more sense once you have the back story.
The Last Farmhouse
Summer is over, some type of COVID is back, and the urban sprawl masters burned down the Last Farmhouse. It was a controlled burn. Smoldered for days. No one was hurt. The sprawl masters assured us that the smoke contained no lead, asbestos, fiberglass or other toxic chemicals, because those did not exist when the farmhouse was built 100 years ago.
Still Steel
The Art League of Ocean City had an exhibit in May 2023 called "Reflections." The curator of this juried photography show, selected 42 photos for the exhibit, including my 2021 photo "Still Steel" which was awarded 3rd place in the exhibit. For the Award, the Judge's noted "An eloquent composition that leaves you locked with mystery and balance. This is the kind of image that tells you the consideration and thought that went into it."
Steel Away
Pennsylvania did produce the bulk of the USA's steel, but in the last 50 years production dwindled. Photographers love the old abandon mills. This shot of fellow photographer Mike Holmes as a steel worker was juried into the 6th Annual Chania International Photo Festival and was exhibited on the Greek island of Crete. The photo also won a first place ribbon in the 2023 Maryland State Fair.
Juggling Sand 2022 Retrospective
Juggling Sand is my 2022 retrospective. Some shots were taken before 2022, but they are in this book because they received recognition in 2022. There are more photos of people and abstractions - I look at it as people and poetry. The COVID word is being used less and less, but the world is still a messy place. We teeter on World War III involving Ukraine, Putin, China, North Korea, Iran, the EU and the USA. Global warming is causing an increase in what we still call "natural disasters." In the USA we have the toxic brew of violent polarizing politics mixed with an utter lack of gun control. I have not lost hope, but it does feel like we are just Juggling Sand.
