Juggling Sand 2022 Retrospective https://www.mikeephotography.com/blog/2023/2/juggling-sand-2022-retrospective Juggling Sand is my 2022 retrospective.  Some shots were taken before 2022, but they are in this book because they received recognition in 2022. There are more photos of people and abstractions - I look at it as people and poetry.  The COVID word is being used less and less, but the world is still a messy place.  We teeter on World War III involving Ukraine, Putin, China, North Korea, Iran, the EU and the USA.  Global warming is causing an increase in what we still call "natural disasters."  In the USA we have the toxic brew of violent polarizing politics mixed with an utter lack of gun control.  I have not lost hope, but it does feel like we are just Juggling Sand.

The last 2 years have been abstract, surreal, and often absurd.  Even with new strains of COVID for the summer of 2022, people are dying to get out, gather, travel and pretend like the world is back to normal.  I have never seen the beach so packed with people.    I had to add the melting ice cream, because "The Heat is On."

Used Words https://www.mikeephotography.com/blog/2022/6/used-words Over the early winter months of 2022, I experimented with some abstract photos. This photo was the result being at my desk late one night, and noticing how the single light in the room was reflecting off an unsigned contract I was about to throw in the trash.  I began to play with the contract by rolling several pages and tying them together.  I shot some photos of the paper bundle using a single LED flashlight as my light source. I liked this photo the best.  After the photo session, I threw out the unsigned contract, but I kept this photo of "Used Words."  It was juried into Praxis Gallery's Abstract Exhibit for June 2022, and will also hang at the ViewPoint Gallery in Canada in September 2022.  I joke that it needs to hang in every corporate boardroom in North America.  Patrons are buying.

The Joker https://www.mikeephotography.com/blog/2022/3/the-joker This is the appropriate photo to close out 2021. Here is the back story.  I shot this on an Ocean City bus in the summer of 2021.  The background is the divider from the lower to upper portion of the bus.  This crazy guy with the Joker mask (we had to wear masks on the city bus) gets on the bus and he agrees to allow me to shoot his portrait. I liked the color version, but it had some wild distracting reflections off his sunglasses.  Two different photo critics told me they liked the photo, but the reflection was just too much.  Solution - get rid of the sunglass glare and make it a BnW photo.  The BnW version was then juried into a portrait exhibit and hung at the Blank Wall Gallery in Athens, Greece in February 2022. Coastal HWY at Dusk https://www.mikeephotography.com/blog/2022/1/coastal-hwy-at-dusk My 2022 started on a good note. L.A. Photo Curator makes an annual selection of the top 40 photos from all submissions for the year. My photo of Coastal HWY at Dusk was selected as one of the top 40 photos of 2021.  The curator said, "These images were submitted to specific themes over the year but they alone really have so much to say - they stand on their own regardless of a theme. A good photograph is not just a pretty picture. It's an entrance into an intimate space, another world, a timeless moment frozen that moved the artist to make the photograph. And what was it that made the artist choose this moment to share? We don't know, but like all art it's all subjective and there are different meanings and messages for us all. I hope you will take some time and sit with these images that in my opinion are special enough to be called iconic."

PH - I hope you are OK.  Seeing some scary news from the USA!  Looks like bad things are happening.

ME - We are fine.  10% of the USA population are Goons.  When you need that 10% to get elected, you get Goon results. The Goons went to DC today with an orange headed Goon cheering them on.  The Goons will always be part of the USA population, but the Goons are not in control - this is just ugly democracy at work.

PH - We got scared.  When a mob invades your parliament it is serious business.  In my opinion, it looked liked a coup.  But hopefully your fine country will prevail.

COVID is killing humans, so most humans are social distancing and staying in their homes  thereby limiting contact with virus carrying humans.  This is destroying world economies, but the animals love it.  Pollution in the skies and oceans is disappearing.  People are seeing more mountain lions, eagles, dolphins, and turtles.  Is mother nature striking back against greed?  I'm not sure.

I have done a lot of scuba diving in the Caribbean, but never really took pictures I liked.  I haven't been diving in a few years now, but I still love to snorkel.  If the water is clear and conditions are right, I can capture some decent photos with a little Nikon CoolPix camera that is waterproof down to 16 ft.  I have always enjoyed this photo - I guess it is something about the harmless little silver sides swimming in front of the spiny sea urchins that you don't want to step on as a diver or snorkeler.
